I hear quite often that bearing the Mexican flag is of cultural importance, but (call me a racist if you want) cultural assimilation is a very important aspect of naturalization. This is not to say that one should give up all parts of his heritage, but a general acceptance of American culture is a minimum requirement for political advocacy in my opinion.
