Well it looks as though I may have chased off OTC Bassist. Honest criticism has a tendency to do that to those who don't care to hear it. Sad really because being able to take it is as important as being able to give it. :shrugs:

Thats the point I was trying to make. You may see metal, for example, as having many difference subtleties but that doesn't necessarily apply to everyone. I prefer listening to metal but as far as I'm concerned there is only a couple of variances. You don't need to be a connoisseur to know what you like or dislike.

My reference to Thrash Metal refers to the way it's played. Most often the guitar is not picked or strummed but thrashed violently. This gives the music a distinct sound.

Breaking music down into many 100's of varying flavors of the same style I think is ridiculous. For 90% of the public being told this color is an off center Lily pedal pink means absolutely zilch. It's freakin light pink. It's a musicians way of trying to separate themselves from the multitude that are doing the same thing they do. You want to be different do it by skillz not by adding a new flavor, by name only, to the mix.

Fact is to 90% of the people that hear it, it's going to be metal. These people may not matter to you right now but in time you'll figure out what they think will make or break you. Believe it or not you're in the business to play what other people want to hear not what you want to play. You'll also figure this out eventually. Or go nowhere.
