| Well...lay away probably costs them money in the long run. They will probably do a WALMART credit card thing so they can charge a high interest rate. Penny's and Sears used to do lay away back in the day but cut that for credit cards I think. A smart alternative to lay away is just saving the money and buying the item. It's no different than lay away.
