Are you able to query the modem? go to phone and modems in the control panel, modems tab, select the modem properties, go to diagnostics tab, then choose query. Look over the query results. Does it appear to return the correct model number? More than likely NOT. Make new connection doesn't recognize the make/model.

Also, is this internal or external? Int.What model? Not sure but it came out of a Gateway box.

Have you tried using a standard modem driver? No.If this works then your driver is wrong. If it doesn't you have a connectivity (external) issue or a bad modem.

External modems: Have you tried a different cable? Dialtone is clean.

Have you tried issuing a manual command at the command line prompt? No, and here is where I fall off the planet...
echo atdt2251111 > com1
echo=repeats your typed command
atdt=dial this number
2251111<-replace this with a real phone number
> =send output to...
com1 <--change this to the com port assigned to the modem
If you hear it dial then it is an OS or driver issue. if not, something else may be taking the resources for that com port or using the same IRQ.

If you still can't get it to work and want a good modem, see my USRobotics in the classifieds section. It has every feature available. Not all 56k's are the same. Error correction and compression schemes can make a BIG difference in throughput. I am negotiable.
I'll make another attempt at it tomorrow... maybe..
