As much as I would like to think otherwise, the democrat's didn't *win* this election as much as the present administration made the republicans lose it. Some in the Republican party started to realize the issues this past summer but obviously were two slow or too late to make the change.
For example: The Republican Senator from Rhode Island was a republican in party name only, had a 60+% approval rating in his state, and either him or his father had held that seat for much of recent history. He lost the election. The guy was known, had no obvious character issue, and rarely voted with a Bush position but still lost! With the executive branch not up for election, being a Republican became a scarlet "R".
Highwayman was right, there was no cohesive message from the Democrats beside the "there needs to be a change." I think enough moderates got elected that If Pelossi heeds the lessons of Clinton and runs to her base but governs' from the middle then perhaps decent legislation can come from this, and if Bush heeds the lesson from this election he'll move to a concillatory position and things will get done. If they don't then it's a stalemate and at least, no worse legislation gets passed. This is not a veto-proof congress like Ford dealt with after 1974.
It won't suprise me to see a Democrat capture the white house in 2008 and control of one or both houses revert back to the republicans.
And how come no one has mentioned to best thing from this election? It's gonna be 18 months or so before you have to hear "I'm so and so-and I approved this message"
