| Lots of folks think the aquifer's an underground "ocean of water" cuz others have used the term... It started building during the uplift of the Rocky Mountains.... and over the eons water began pushing debris along with its downward flow. The debris included rocks and sand that stayed-put where it may... Many of those places were river-canyons that eventually filled with debris.... and water.
We've pumped the upper level down and what remains is those underground river-canyons.
