She was born in 1979 and is the daughter of a Vietnam Vet and a nurse. She grew up in Doylsetown, PA. Her parents divorced when she was seven. She didn't have her hit first single until 2000, which would make her 21 when it hit. She had been performing since age 14. So, I would say she probably knows more about hard times than anybody would care to know.
About the dress, I didn't even notice, after you mentioned it I went back and watched it again. Then I saw that she always had her dress covering anything that shouldn't be exposed (unlike Britney Spears). I also saw that she had very good posture and was sitting how a singer should sing.
