If our judicial system were ran like it is intended, there would be no innocent people in prison and time would fit crime. If labor unions and other groups would keep their hands out of things, prisons could and would be self sufficiant. It was a prison in Florida, if I remember correctly, that had a company come in and build a plant inside the prison. Inmates who qualified were trained in honest jobs within the plant and were payed actual wages not prison wages. The inmates were advanced in the company like any other worker and were allowed 10% of their income. The rest went to paying restitution and fines and to the inmates family. After being released from the prison those inmates who worked for the company continued to work for the company and were relocated to other plants. The recivatism (sic) rate was around 5% I believe. The reason it was pulled? Labor unions complained and others in the community felt the inmates were getting special attention.

Our judicial system is not based upon punishment, it is based upon rehabilitation. Now you, I, and whomever may not like that but that is what it is. Prison is not intended for punishment, but the fact one is in prison is considered punishment, it is intended to keep criminals away from the public and give them a chance to rehabilitate themselves. If prisons could be run that way, they would actually work. Unfortunately, like you said Tex, there are loopholes upon loopholes which allow not only local governments to exploit them, but the inmates themselves to do the same.
