| Whites detectors have always been good too me. I've used a lot of detectors over the years. My first was the Garrett Money Hunter BFO I went through all the advancements from BFO to TR to TR Discriminator to VLF/TR Discriminator to VLF Discriminator. I've had all the Garrett Freedom series I II & III Garrett Master Hunter, Master Hunter ADS VII, Tesoro Inca and Mayan, Coin Masters and Gold Masters.
In 1991 I used my income tax return and bought a brand new Whites Spectrum Eagle. This detector took my detecting to a whole other realm. Talk about a difference in detectors. My hunting buddies John and Leland and I always took our new detectors to Wright Park for testing. Up until then we had never found anything there except for a wheatie or two. We just assumed the place was cleaned out by old Carl Clair.
John had the Garrett Master Hunter CX, Leland had the Tesoro Toltec 100 and I now had my Eagle Spectrum. All top of the line detectors. We got out by the band shell, tuned our detectors and started to hunt. We like staying close together so if one person gets a signal we all can check it out to see how our detectors respond to target and compare performance.
Two steps and my Eagle rang out with a good solid signal at 6 1/2". The VDI said 82-83 which is in the silver dime range. I had John and Leland check the signal and neither gave a signal they would dig. I checked again and it was solid as a rock so I decided to dig it. John and Leland watched as I dug not one silver dime but three silver dimes the oldest being a 1909 barber. I also dug three wheats and a 1942D silver war nickle out of the same hole.
This went on all day. I couldn't walk 2 steps without getting a good signal and dug coin after coin. It was as if no one had ever been below 6". Everything I dug was 6" or deeper and the majority had more than one coin in each hole. I ended up recovering over 2000 coins just around the band shell dating back to 1881(seated dime). Indian Heads, V-Nickles, Standing Liberties and Walking Liberties.
Today even the entry level detectors perform as well as my old Spectrum did.
I may get out tomorrow if the weather isn't bad. I think it's supposed to get up to 37. I know thats cold but I like to bundle up and go to the sandpit where the sand reflects the sun to make it a bit warmer, and the ground isn't frozen.
