| You're right its been quite some time since I filled out an application but I do remember seeing the checkbox allowing them to check your credit. I always thought these were a generic employment application and that box applied only to certain job types such as working with money. Anyway, I never granted permission to check my credit and still got hired. Besides, why would they bother asking for permission if they weren't legally bound to do so?
