On this day in 1881, Bat Masterson fought his last gunfight in Dodge City

"On this day in 1881, Bat Masterson fought his last gunfight, in
Dodge City, KS. Then he got the hell outta Dodge, as they say. He
subsequently moved to New York where he became a newspaperman, which may be why he is remembered today as a fierce Old West gunfighter - despite the fact that he only ever killed one man.

Bat's last words, which were found on the typewriter in his room, were:

"There are those who argue that everything breaks even in this old dump of a world of ours. I suppose these ginks who argue that way hold that because the rich man gets ice in the summer and the poor man gets it in the winter things are breaking even for both. Maybe so, but I'll swear I can't see it that way." "
