(Well, I know we're getting off topic, but it seems to be what everyone wants to talk about, so here we go. Apologies to the OP for hijacking the thread.)
Hillary probably deserves the shot, but that's not at all what I was getting at. What I was irked about was Tee's comments about the Rutgers women, and the "Oreo President". For awhile, I thought I misunderstood and was thinking I'd back down from my earlier comments. Now, after others have piled on, I don't think I will.
First, let's get the Duke situation out of the way. The woman who wrongly accused these guys should be punished severely. She's done more damage to these men and Duke University that she can ever make up for. As a stripper and single mom, she'll probably never see enough money in her lifetime to in reparations to both these men and the University. She should probably see time in jail for her actions, to tell the truth.
On top of the obvious harms, though, she's done a huge disservice to real victims of rape, because so many will take future rape claims less seriously now after this scandal. She's made it far more likely that a woman will just keep her mouth shut rather than file a report. That is already a big enough problem; this woman has just made it worse. Her actions are disgusting and without defense.
Like I said before, I don't really care so much about taking shots at Hillary over this. I'm sure her meeting with the team is largely motivated by the hope that it will generate positive publicity for her campaign. I am willing to give Hillary the benefit of the doubt to some extent, however. Imus' comments are not limited to being racist, but sexist too. If there is any one person in America that can and should be showing public support for the Rutgers' team, it's the woman who currently has the most realistic shot at being the first female President in our country's history. It shouldn't surprise anyone that Hillary would be the first and/or most vocal public figure to rally to the side of these women.
So anyway, my point here is that Hillary has a link to these women. She's blazing a trail that most women don't travel. She's doing things right now that women are generally discouraged from doing. She's working very hard at it. I'm not asking anyone to agree with her politics, but surely you can admit she's facing a tougher road in her chosen career than the men she's up against. The number of people in this country that won't vote for a woman for that reason only dwarf the number that won't vote for a man for the same reason.
It the same vein, by being collegiate athletes, the Rutgers women are doing things a little differently than most women. They're playing a sport which very few people respect. Many sports fans dislike female athletes already because of Title IX politics. Many others don't care about their athletic accomplishments unless they are hot. Whatever, I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion of Title IX or women's basketball. Just recognize that these women are blazing a tougher path than most and they are working hard to do it.
Now, if someone can tell me where Hillary would have a common tie with the Duke players who were, admittedly, destroyed by the media coverage of their scandal, I'll eat my words.
Finally, would anyone care to defend Tee's obviously racist "Oreo President" comment?
