Flange you have made an excellent summary of the situation. Most on the pro-gun side would prefer to wait until emotions had time to settle down and all the facts were in. That doesn’t happen and to sit back while the other side plays on emotion and sets the tone makes my side appear to have positions that are indefensible.
After Columbine the Colorado legislature wisely tabled all gun related bills, pro and con, until the next session. An example the Federal government will not follow.
BTW, over the weekend I read some newspaper pundit calling for a ban on “semiautomatic machineguns”. I guess those are like “semiautomatic revolvers” and “semiautomatic bolt action rifles”.
