What's giving them a black eye is this lack of info coming out from our officials on a murder case. Now we can pass the back by saying this office is handling it, or that office is responsible for disseminating information to the public, but that does not change the fact that the only information we are getting is coming from other state agencies.
The democrats established the freedom of information act in 1974 in the midst of the Watergate scandal. The purpose of it was to empower the citizens to police our officials. We have a right to question what goes on at the police department, in fact it's our duty. To promote the idea that they are to conduct themselves behind the scens without checks, without public scrutiny, is arrogant and contrary to the spirit of the first amendment and the bill of rights.
Many of you have pushed the "low pay, little thanks" argument. Well, I am pretty sure the cops on our force knew what they were signing onto before they submitted their application, yet they still did. Compensation is free market driven, if the cops complaining don't want to do it, that's fine, there will be someone else waiting to take your job. Last time I looked at the median income for high school graduates, 30k was a much higher than average starting point.
I am not trying to rag on the cops but you two that have come to rally to their cause have forgotten what it's like to be a non-cop, a normal citizen. We don't enjoy the benefits of inside information, immunity from tickets and special treatment in the court/legal system.
I think many of us are pretty sure that had this been Jose Buneulo or Manuel Burrito, his name and some details would be out in the news already, the local news. Don't tell me this is par for the course..Or maybe we should ask Roger Valadez in Wichita?
When it's done to us, it's simply an error:

The police made an error in holding Valadez on misdemeanor charges, to test his DNA as a BTK suspect, and then reporting this baseless suspicion to KSN.

His name was released with a couple of hours of being detained.
It's been rumored that this person had a previous history of sexual harassment complaints- if this is true and it was swept under the rug, you bet the DCPD deserves a black eye for keeping him on the force and arming him with a gun. Even CC applicants must be free from a history of domestic violence, and a vigorous background check is performed to ensure that.
I am not bashing cops - I believe in equality for cops and civilians alike. Don't defend the premise that cop-cases should be handled differently, with respect to press coverage and the justice system.
