| Passports are required for airline travel. You don't need one for ground travel; until the end of this year when even border crossing(s) will require one.
The reason is simple: they don't want US to enter Mexico and meddle with their gummint. With a passport the US owns us and must take 'us' back. Without a passport, Mexico would be stuck with any one of "us".
