Early on there was an animal that evolved into a chicken-like creature who survived by laying eggs rather than another form of procreation. It turned into what we know as a chicken today. So at some point the first chicken had to come out of an egg.
So I'm going with egg first.
And yes it matters because either God made chickens and they lay eggs or something similar to my explanation above happened.
