| There are government programs designed to supplement the income of the poor. Housing, food stamps etc. Those who really want to rise above poverty have the tools to do so. Raising the handouts will only raise the poverty base. If we make it easier to live without helping yourself where is the incentive?
I know this sounds very insensitive but tough love always does. We are not helping anybody by making it easier to remain poor.
We like to think raising the minimum wage would put another loaf of bread on the table of a family struggling, but the reality is it would more than likely just add another six pack for the week, a new steering wheel cover for the SUV or a few more nights of bingo or the bar for the week.
