We will never learn from our past because we are wrapped in the present.

If instant news was possible during WWII we would have never finished. The public would have turned against our leaders and they would have caved in. Ever see the news reports from that time? The Japanese and Germans were all seen as the enemy. Sure, there were some who felt it was below us to lower to the level of name calling, but the vast majority hated the enemy. You never saw news reports feeling sympathy for them. Now, in todays world, you are a horrible person if you do not try to see things from the enemy's side.

War is what it is, If you ever even question for one second if you would kill, annhilate or eradicate your enemy you have no business being in it. There is no right and wrong, that stuff is for philosophers. The enemy is hiding in a building, you eradicate the whole block. To feel sympathy for the enemy is a weakness, which they will exploit to the fullest. Guilt has no place on the battlefield.
