I believe the newspaper is here to serve it's readers/audience. I do not believe it's the police officers responsibility to report to the news. They have way to much to do. I do believe that they should work together to ensure that the public is as informed as they can or want to be. I was just home this last week and our local newspaper prints EVERYTHING so you know what the police and sheriff are doing. They print tickets, the jail roster, court stuff, who was arrested and for what. You can track that JOE CITIZEN from DODGE CITY got a DUI and is in jail pending court. They list the sheriff calls regardless if it was an accident, theft or emergency response. AT least there the people know what's going on in their community.

If there was violence in ANY park in town I personally would want to know....not for the dirt value of the story but say a certain park is a known gang hang out we should know. THEN perhaps I wouldn't take my family there AND perhaps the citizens can HELP the police by calling in suspicious activity. I would think that since the police in this town are overworked and short handed they would WANT as much help as possible from JOE Citizen. I'm not talking vigilante stuff...just keeping an eye out.

On another note I called the police the other day about two stray dogs (probably lurkers cousins) hanging around the front door of the mall. This was about 7:30 am. They told me that they would let the Doggie Police know when they came to work but that wouldn't be for awhile. I basically wasted my time calling. I wonder what would have happened if one of those dogs bit someone?
