That sentence just bugs the heck out of me, perhaps the writer thinks the rest of America is as math challenged as he/she is. The article could have said that half the nation's families earn above the median family income of about $56,000 too.

median: noun:The middle value in a distribution, above and below which lie an equal number of values.
