I think the reason pit bulls have been targeted is 2 reasons.

1. as jackknife stated. Poor excuse for owners.

2. Potential to kill. Even under good owners.

Too many incidents with pit bulls with owners that have said their dogs would never bite.

I've always said my dogs would never bite because they are so good natured and well behaved, but I have seen them react totally out of character and I realize even the best manor dogs can react unpredictably under the right circumstances.

In my opinion, aside from being completely isolated from all strangers, you can never guarantee a dog won't attack. The problem is that there will always be a chance the dog could get loose, and a pit bull has the potential to do great harm in a short time.

I'd love to own a mountain lion but I know better.
