Obviously it depends on the qaulity of camera you buy. Most Hotels / Motels do not spend the money they should for security cameras. A simple setup like explained would capture good enough from a distance up to 12ft in decent light. Obviously a parking lot would need a much better camera and IR lighting. Cheap night vision camera's are not good to identify suspects.

It could have prevented a break in. I already gave one possible example of it working. Mount one right above your front or back door. It will not be missed by a perp scopeing your place. Why wouldn't someone want buy a $100- 200 camera system to help protect thousands in Guns, Electronics, Jewelry ect..? It just may help.

I also hear it can bring down your home insurance too, but I don't know that for fact.
