Lets take our local community for example...I haven't seen any professionals with a lot of piercings or visible tatoo's (maybe that's why they are professionals?!) I'm not against tatoo's so don't get me wrong. I would go to a Doctor or buy a house from a real estate agent with a big loop hanging out of their nose or a tatoo running up the side of their neck. Maybe it isn't normal in the little bubble you call your comfort zone but let me assure you that it is becoming very much the norm. I work with many, many professional people and while you might not be able to tell upon meeting them, many are in fact heavily tattooed. Body mod and the like isn't even just for the Hot Topic crowd either. Trust me when I tell you that I have been waited on at a bank where the tellers and even *gasp* loan officers have had stretched ears. It has gotten to the point where grandma's get tattooed to mark special occasions and doctors and lawyers and even preschool teachers can have entire sleeves done and no one blinks an eye. It truly isn't a big deal anymore. I don't know where you get your sources but it is so mainstream now. Getting a tattoo is hardly a way to rebel anymore since your mailman and gynecologist are donning ink. To think that tattoos and body mod equal a certain "class" of people is pretty small thinking.
Doesn't mean you will like it but hey, it is the case. I don't like stone washed jeans but I still see plenty of folks wearing those around in Kansas so it seems we both deal with norms that we don't like.
