It's not entirely about metal sticking out of a person's face or surface piercings visible above the shirt collar. Firefighters aren't allowed to have facial hair, with the occasional exception of mustaches. The reason? Facial hair doesn't allow the SCBA mask to get a good seal. The harness on an SCBA mask is the reason I'm not big into wearing earrings. You never know when the pager's going off, and the harness on the mask will easily rip out an earring - especially when you're in a hurry. | Same with the Army, no facial hair on duty and no earrings on duty. No facial piercings or tat's on your forehead or neck that can't be covered by a shirt...period. I guess the FD doesn't allow that because they are a professional organization. I guess if you did want a face piercing or a tat on your face/neck you could go work at applebee's. We need good firefighters so I'm glad you don't!
