| I would think that as a manager, I would say that it isn't a matter of "does the kid want to improve." If the employee doesn't improve the employee is not going to be an employee long. I agree the manager sets the standard, if somebody can't or won't step up to that standard it's time to let them go and hire the next one.
Once other employees see that you aren't messing around they will step it up a notch and get the employee peer pressure to do a good job. Managers need to be strict but fair.
