Speaking as an immigrant myself, I have to say this is garbage. If you have gained your Green Card through the LEGAL AND PROPER channels then getting a Social Security card is not a big hassle, even if you don't plan to work for whatever reason. In fact, I had mine BEFORE I was awarded my Green Card, I actually got it when I was given my work visa. If you obey the guidelines that are in place, and treat the system with respect, it generally isn't too difficult to get a Social Security card, drivers license etc....

Yes, let's let a little local rivalry get in the way of implementing what is a DAMN good idea.

While we are on the subject of driving, perhaps this is a good time for me to reminisce on the fact that in England if you cannot speak GOOD English you are not allowed to take the drivers test - PERIOD. The written test there consists of 50 questions - 25 of which are ASKED of you by the examiner and require ORAL not written responses so they can gauge how good your English is, the other 25 are multiple choice like they are here. Yes of course over there there are the usual people crying that it is unfair to non English speakers, but because all the road signs are in English the government have so far been able to hide behind the 'safety first' banner.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was having a hard time swallowing that bit of information about legal immigrants not being able to get driver's licenses.

It's good to know that it was a bunch of crap!
