Unfortunately, we only have access to 3 (maybe 4) carriers. Of those, Sprint is the best for me, considering coverage. And I get a lot of minutes and extras for the money - I have 800, I think, cell-to-cell is free, internet access, and I have up to 4 Email accounts I can monitor. I can also get GPS directions on it (but I have a separate Garmin device for that cuz the phone's too small for map-at-a-glance) and I usually have very good service coast to coast without interruption. For my money, Sprint's the only way to go. Even though I have to do a soft reset every week or so because it loses it's satellite and becomes very confused...

and any time I have to go to the Sprint store for something, I have to wait and wait (but that's no different than the other carriers up here). I have had some great luck with customer service, though - I know others haven't had the same experience.
