The thing is you can't. By law when you call for reference I think you can just ask if they worked there and a couple other general questions. I don't think they can ask if you have been fired or why. I'm not sure but this is what someone told me you can ask..
Dates of employment, job duties. You can't ask if they got fired but you can ask if they rehireable you can't ask why. You can ask their strengths and area's of opportunities.
