But as long as they pay large amounts of money to the community, either in taxes or other benefits, they can... and will. When I was there, the deal was if the schools shut down due to weather, a lot of workers didn't show up for work because they had little ones at home. The thought was (from the teacher's side) that they'd become nothing more valuable to the community than day care, which is absolutely right. In order for the teachers to give a crap about what they teach, the parents have to support them and not treat them as glorified babysitters. I wish somebody in the School District would grow some balls and challenge the packing plants. They can't shut down over night. They could over a year, but by then the school district would have (hopefully) right-sized, too. It would definitely suck for a while, but better in the long run. I really have a problem with the school district bowing down to any special interest group, no matter who it is.
