Visual Basic

I'm relatively new to Visual Basic and I am currently going to school for Networking and Security. One of my classes is Automation Programming. In this class they teach Visual Basic 6. My question is, is VB6 the most widely used version and why not use the newer versions like Visual Studio and such?
