I watched this as part of a documentary on Animal Planet (I think that was where I saw it) about smart animals. What I remember about those elephants where that they were at a rescue sort of farm. They were logging elephants and there was no longer a need for them. They sell their paintings and use the proceeds to support the elephants needs. I don't think they are being abused. They really are smart animals but there was a question on whether or not the trainer was directing the animal. However, after being show how to paint they very often chose to do it on their own. It seemed to be something they liked to do!

I also recently read an article about the video and a lot of those points were made. I bet it could find it again.
