| How are you trying to run disk defrag? I don't use another program to defrag. I use what came on my XP computer. Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter. I have found that occasionally programs like Diskkeeper or Speedfrag, etc. tend to cause conflicts with other things running on your computer.
You can also run a chkdsk which just checks the disk. Chkdsk /f automatically tries to fix any bad sectors that the chkdsk found, hence the /f. If you have problems with the drive that chkdsk/f won't fix then you may have to resort to re formatting the drive and re installing all the software back onto the newly clean drive.
