Unless the slug that killed her was damaged beyond examination.
I guess then they would need the bolt to compare markings onthe casing.

He kept the spent casing of the shell which he used to hit the target in the chinese puzzle box which is also a place where he kept keepsakes. All the items in the box where of sentimental value to him. And of course he kept the target for the very same reason.
