Why would the prosecutor introduce any evidence regarding a murder weapon that he could not confirm, nor refute?

p.s. WTE...when the bad guy confesses to killing someone with say a .270 rifle, and he has the exact same caliber rifle in his home, but you have zero capability to be match ballistics, you DO NOT enter this info. into evidence.
