It's Hollywood hype. It has had the largest per screen opening because of where they release it. If it would have been released nationwide it prolly wouldn't be in that position. They release it in the major markets that are "more accepting" to homosexual themes to build momentum before they open it in the red states.
"Brokeback," which was named best picture by the L.A. Film Critics Assn. over the weekend, made an astounding $544,549 on five plays in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, for an average of $108,910. (SAN FRAN, OF COURSE IT WILL DO GREAT THERE!)
These are all BLUE states....I doubt if it will ever make it to
DC. Think about if the openings would have been in RED states. Say...Ok City, Dallas, KC, and the likes....we would be reading about a Broke Back Bust....I personally feel this movie will not do that well in the midwest BUT it won't be reported that way. If it were on every screen nationwide it would be getting killed....call it selective marketing......
