This may have been true in the 50's and 60's because so many people clung so fiercely to their belief in God that finding otu we are not alone in the universe would have been too much. I mean they have enough of a problem explaining away dinosaurs and such that beings from outside of the Earth would really throw them off.

Indeed there still are people out there like that but I think there are enough open minded people on the planet that they'd be able to deal with it.

Hell, there are a lot of people who would be giddy to know they were right.

I guess until we have a moment, as depicted in "The Day The Earth Stood Still," and a ship lands with international media coverage we are subject to speculation and tin foil hats.
