Dodge City always has been windy.

So it wasn't any big news this week in 1983 when a magazine released a story that the western Kansas community was the windiest of all cities in the country.

For years, people tried to pin the title on Chicago, a spokesman for the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C., told The News for a May 4, 1983, story.

"That's just not so," he said. "Out of 250 major cities in the country, (Dodge City) has the greatest annual mean wind speed for the past period."

Even today, according to the National Climatic Data Center, Dodge City has an average wind speed of about 14 mph. Other top cities include Amarillo, Texas, 13.5 mph; Rochester, Minn., 13.1 mph.

And Chicago isn't as high on the list as some might think. Its average annual wind speed is 10.3 mph.

In fact, it is said Chicago wasn't nicknamed the "Windy City" just because of the breezes coming off the lake but because of the long-winded politicians.
I'll bet today's wind kicks us up a couple of ticks.
