Totally agree 88-31-10, the fear factor then was based around the "Domino Theory" that all south-east Asia would, one-by-one, turn commie heaven forbid!
Now you can go onto the Vietnamese Tourism site and book a room at the Sheraton Saigon hotel or read about:

US group plans five billion USD resort in Danang
Wednesday, 09 April 2008

The US-based Oak Tree Group has revealed a plan to build a five billion USD resort in Lien Chieu district, central Danang city. The group presented the project, the biggest of its kind in Vietnam so far, to leaders of the municipal People’s Committee on April 7.

The 500 ha Sunrise resort will house a golf course, a therapeutic centre, villas, high-end hotels, a marina, a telpher route, a heliport and a casino. Once fully operational, the project will generate jobs for more than 10,000 local workers, according to the group’s leaders.

Returning to Iraq the essential truth remains that:

1) there were no WMD
2) there were no links to Al Qaeda
3) there was no connection to 9/11 attacks

but there was OIL, and plenty of it! Also Saddam was seriously considering changing the sale of his oil from US$ to Euros, a worry for the US government who feared that if this caught on with other oil producing states it could adversely affect the US dollar.

In September 2002, Tony Blair stated, in an answer to a parliamentary question, that “regime change in Iraq would be a wonderful thing. That is not the purpose of our action; our purpose is to disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction…”
In November of that year, Tony Blair further stated that “So far as our objective, it is disarmament, not regime change - that is our objective. Now I happen to believe the regime of Saddam is a very brutal and repressive regime, I think it does enormous damage to the Iraqi people... so I have got no doubt Saddam is very bad for Iraq, but on the other hand I have got no doubt either that the purpose of our challenge from the United Nations is disarmament of weapons of mass destruction, it is not regime change.”
The sooner the US (& Britain), pulls out the better for everyone. Being there ensures we remain part of the problem not part of the solution. Arabs have never liked infidels occupying their lands as the failure of the crusades proved. Of course the US won't whilst Cheney has anything to do with it!
