| Top News Story in Globe I just read the top story on the front page of the Globe in today's paper(May 8) and can honestly say that Pres. Bush is doing something right for a change. It seems that the legislature has finally agreed on a farm bill, but Pres. Bush says that he can't sign the bill into law because of the "bloated" subsidies to farmers at a time with record grain prices. I agree with the President on this one fully.
Why should farmers get welfare, in the form of subsidies, to run their business when other businesses can't get the same sort of payments. If a local bar & grill has slow business for a time they can't get a federal subsidy to help them out, so why should a farmer. Farming is a business, if you can't adapt with the times and current business climate to make a living, then maybe it is time to sell off to somebody else that can make it in this business climate.
If the government is going to give welfare(subsidies) to farmers they should give them to every business owner.
