A swat on the ass is not, in my opinion, a spanking. It is just that, a swat on the ass. Repeated swats in concession, in my opinion, is a spanking.
In my household, spankings usually were in tandum with words. Each word spoken was a swat. My mother and father, luckily, were people of few words. My grandmother, on the other hand, used exceptionally long sentences to get her point across.
