Raceway Park meeting delayed

DODGE CITY - A meeting slated for Monday to discuss a proposal to increase the public funding going into Dodge City Raceway Park has been postponed.

Ford County and Dodge City leaders were to meet Monday to discuss the matter, and potentially take action. But timing conflicts prompted officials to reschedule it to Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Mike Mathis, who operates the city-owned raceway, seeks more funding than originally budgeted from a special city and county sales tax stream to help run the oval. As is, he is to receive $162,000 for raceway operations this year, but has asked for $315,000 plus $110,000 more in reserves to help cover any unforeseen costs to put on three planned special events.

A civic body recommended approval of Mathis' request, but city and county leaders have final say.

I'm sure nobody will show up to protest this little bit of economic development....
