It's not about being rich. It's about, once you start using these places it's hard to get out of using them. You borrow from them say $200. You have to pay it back in 2 weeks, but not $200, more like $230-250. Now you just spent $250 out of your paycheck to pay back the
LEGAL loanshark. You find yourself again without enough money left in the paycheck to pay bill, buy groceries, etc. So...you have to go back to the place to borrow more money just to survive another 2 weeks!
It's a vicious cycle that is very hard to break once most people get started.
PS. Not only that, but that particular pawn shop deals in stolen merchandise. Maybe not all, but I know for a fact that some of it is/was.
