That's NOT how it works....all the cops have to do is get a search warrant.
The CAN take the merchandise, BUT the pawn shop owner is vested in it. When the person sold it to the pawn shop, they sign a paper stating that THEY own it. Doesn't mean the pawn shop owner is DEALING in stolen merchandise, but he still has some kind of ownership in it, being that he bought it in good faith.
If the cops seize that merchandise they still can NOT release it to the owner, until the little thief is prosecuted. WHY?? because it is EVIDENCE. Which means the thief's lawyer and the judge etc, is entitled to SEE the evidence at trial.
I also know the people that owned this merchandise, and YES they did find their property there, and YES the police did seize it.
and NO I don't work at Bob's Pawn shop.
