Hmmm, that's certainly not what national experts say about Casino affects on small isolated towns.....

Nice of you to talk about experts, but never show any quotes or source info for what you say the experts have to say. Everything I have read and researched on my own show the opposite of what your "so-called" experts say. Cripple Creek, CO is a small isolated town that is thriving....from the brink of a ghost town to a major tourist attraction/destination casino town. Boonville, MO that was reported in the Globe the other day is over 100 miles from Kansas City (sound familiar? We are 150 miles from Wichita.) and it has seen population growth and more money for the community since the casino has arrived there.

What the Casino Industry (and the State) Doesn't Want You to Know

Bishop Gilmore - Dodge City Diocese
Most Rev. Ronald Gilmore, DD, Bishop of Dodge City, on Ford County casino:
"I am willing to concede that there may well be some economic benefit to the city and to the region: Ford County will receive 3 percent of the revenue produced by the casino, about $1.7 million, I am told. In thinking about that, however, we also need to consider the social cost of the casino. It is estimated that 1,280 to 1,920 persons will become pathological gamblers as a result of a casino. The social cost of one pathological gambler is $13,586 per year. The annual social cost would be between $17 million and $26 million, therefore, roughly 10 to 15 times as much as the county will receive."

WLA | News Some in former Wild West town in Kansas pinning hopes on casino. The economic impact is also being debated. A report last year, produced for the state by a University of Nevada, Las Vegas professor and gambling industry expert William Thompson, suggested a casino would hurt the local economy more than it would help.

Thompson believes a Dodge City casino could generate $80 million a year in revenues. Instead of attracting tourists, however, it would likely draw locals and, as a result, siphon tens of millions of dollars from the local economy. Other obstacles include the city's relatively small airport and its distance — 100 miles — to the nearest interstate.

Cripple Creek actually has pleasant, forested rolling hills.

actually real history was totally destroyed in Cripple Creek, including parking lots around historic houses (until they got them moved away), etc.

Now, with mountains, it is, I guess, still pretty. But it has nothing to do with history, that's for sure.

I'll find the photos to post. It is sad, from a historic point of view -- although I'm sure money has been made (what, the measure of all things ?).

Property taxes went up, by the way, there.

Due to the raise in property value?

Again I say dodge, with its 2 packing plants, has nowhere to go but up from here. We've done nothing long enough. Its time for a change. Certain people have gotten fat off our packinghouse while eating away at every other natural resource dodge has to offer. Tourism could turn this town around and I believe a casino will be the magic bullet.

Dominoes anyone?

The list of Boot Hill Gaming members is incorrect in at least one respect, as Ed Brancart is not the Ford County attorney anymore. I don't know if his successor, John Sauer, is part of Boot Hill Gaming.

Please note this information was supplied on 9/30/2006 . If Boot Hill has any changes on their board they should have notified The Kansas Secretary of State Office.

Your anti-gambling sources are not valid sources of information because they will, of course, be biased against the gaming industry.

Your source of Bishop Gilmore is almost comical!! While he says how bad gambling in a casino will be while he apparently doesn't have a problem with having Bingo in the Knights of Columbus hall 2 nights a week. His bingo is also supervised by the Kansas Lottery by the way.

Quit relying on anti-gaming sources for your information and look at the facts from communities that are doing great from having casino's in them. Have you already forgotten about the article in the Globe about Boonville, MO? They interviewed a city administrator, who said that the city has more money for projects, land annexation for the city, beautification of the city, etc. They interviewed the Police Chief, who said that there has been no increase in crime, no prostitution etc. that the anti-gaming people tell you will always happen. They interviewed a business owner, who said that there has been no change to speak of in business, NOT the drop in business the anti-gaming people try to scare people into believing will happen.
