I don't get it -- DCCC & Public Radio -- why not?

KONQ-Tonight is our chance!

Reading the paper, after being gone a day -- first thought -- great, DCCC Radio students get to have a relationship with NPR, through HPPR. What a bonus, what a great opportunity to actually get real experience on sometimes a national level (news feeds, et al).

And a bunch of pros to work with the students, too.

Why not ? What is bad about that ? Is there some standards that present a problem ?

The crew at HPPR are all about as nice and laid back as radio pros ever are by the way. Non-commercial, too.

My understanding is that this all stems from a new radio station starting in cimarron that will basically overwhelm NPR's signal in Dodge. Thus NPR is looking for a host in the Dodge City area and someone thought it would be a good idea for them to piggyback the College's station. Now the only problem I see here is that it absolutely does no good for anyone enrolled in the radio program unless they just want to listen to Prairie Home Companion every once in a while.

NPR has no business being involved with the college station. I love NPR and I love KONQ, but it doesn't mean I love NPR on CONQ.

The onliest thing HPPR wants from DC3 is their authority to transmit on 91.9.

National inputs, higher standards, better resumes

Won't that all be a good thing for the radio students ? Must be some way to have both local and national feeds -- other NPR college stations do it.

Is that new stations going to be -- ah -- country ? religious right ? what's it going to be, if anyone knows.....

For the record, HPPR wanted to broadcast their total programming. There would've been no student participation or opportunities. Nothing to turn on. Nothing to turn off. No trash to take out, either.

No way to have some of both, huh?

If HPPR is totally unable to offer both national feeds and local feeds, guess I understand DCCC wanting to think about it. Gee, given the way that radio works, with the same music from here to Larned and Great Bend, but local adv.s in the mix, seems that could work between HPPR and DCCC ? Maybe they have rules or something about time on air, etc., to be part of NPR? Radioguy, know anything like about that ?
