Thats understandable that Criminau wants to get rid of the special events center. He's got his softball complex. Hey i got an idea...let's pump those other WND funds into that place. Come on, the public voted for a package deal. Let's have a vote to see if we want to keep Legends Ball Park then. Let's have another vote to keep the soccer fields or not. Let's vote to get rid of the racetrack. It's not an uncommon thing in politics to group a list of items on a ballot together because they know they won't pass by themselves.

I don't know a lot about these softball tournies but when you have about 5 teams come in, with the top 3 teams getting money back, and some of the teams staying in R.V.'s in the parking lot. Other teams are local and don't stay at hotels and such. i dont see where a lot of revenue is coming from. (this isnt the case for every tournament, but for the most part there are low number of teams)

BTW: I'm all for Legends Park, the Soccer Complex, and the Racetrack. I see the good in those items.

I remember the Globe having a web poll before the primary election....

Anybody remember who scored the highest number of 'votes' on it?

Well said, Mr. Taylor. Well said:

Quote:
Dodge City candidates

The Dodge City candidates' forum March 25 revealed that the race involves four candidates - Jim Lembright, Connie Penick, Kent Smoll and Rick Sowers - supported by the chamber against two candidates - Mike Boettcher and Ed Kimminau - who are for the people.

The four candidates called the property tax a small price to pay to live in Dodge City. They consider our property taxes reasonable. Dodge City's property tax runs third-highest among first-class cities in Kansas. All four support building the All Event Center and raising taxes for necessities. They said the only problem we have with taxes is we have a small group of negative people that keep bringing up the tax issue.

Lembright and Smoll served as commissioners when Dodge City had the opportunity to have businesses come to town but the city made the businesses feel not welcomed. Do you think the candidates have changed their ways?

Two other candidates, Boettcher and Kimminau, want to redirect the sales tax to lower property taxes. When we had a special sales tax that built streets look at what it did for businesses that are located on these streets. Good streets and lower taxes will make it a lot easier for the development corp. to sway businesses to town. West Wyatt Earp and North 14th are being rebuilt with property tax. Also, any street improvement for the rest of Dodge City will be paid by property tax.

Look at the number of businesses that have gone out of business in Dodge City in the last 10 to 15 years. We have empty buildings all over town. We have a record amount of residential property for sale. Is this a result of high property tax? How many neighbors and friends have left town in the last 10 years?

If we build an All Event Center, they said it will bring people from surrounding areas. Before we build anything, let's look at what we already have. We have a racetrack that so far has been a disaster, and we have a civic center that is only filled to capacity once or twice a year. I have been to three community concerts this year at the civic center, excellent entertainment, with one-fourth to one-third capacity. How can we fill an All Event Center that has at least double capacity?

We have one of the best rodeo facilities in the United States and we have financial problems there. Boot Hill Museum has been the backbone of tourism in Dodge City for 50 years, and look at its financial problems.

We have a new soccer complex with limited parking and limited seating. We have a baseball field that has no restroom or concession facilities. We have one of the best softball complexes in Kansas but it used only a few weekends a year. The two candidates that want to redirect sales tax want to make these facilities succeed with the sales tax.

Vote Tuesday. Your vote counts.

TOM TAYLOR

A new Special Events Center isn't "economic development"

Maybe not, but it was voted for by the people of Dodge City. To stop it from being built, that option should be put to the voters. Electing a city commisioner can't stop it from being built. They are not that powerful.

example ballot question:

Should the Special Events Center continue as originally planned? ____Yes____No

Bubba are you even going to support the Special Events Center in any way?? Half the people who bitched about the race track being asphalt I don't even think go to the damn races! I am sorry but I think the SEC is a dumbass move on our parts if we decide to build the damn thing. We can't even fill the damn Civic Center!!! Heres what we should do.....Build onto the Civic Center if we want a bigger place. All that land by the swimming pool and the Middle School, we should make it the parking. I know a big hill there but we can figure it out im sure. LOL! OR what the hell is that empty building outside of Dodge going to Wright Kansas??? I am sorry guys but I do not support the SEC and I will tell you all why. I don't think we can keep it open, I don't think the people will support it enough and I damn sure don't think anyone will come to this town to see a major event or have a major convention. Who the hell wants to come here?? It smells like cow poop! Well I will tell you who.....the people who make this town smell like that! that's who!!!! Get real people and wake the hell up. Those are the only
people who are going to support a SEC and you know it, I know it, and the Chamber sure the !%#$& KNOWS IT!!!! The people who are supporting the SEC is the people represented by the Chamber of Commerce. I am going to be blunt here (aren't I always) We keep building new things like this.....WE AREN'T EVER, AND I MEAN EVER, GETTING RID OF EXCEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vote for the people, vote for Kimminau and Boetcher

OK I am done ranting.......carry on! LOL

My 2 cents

The question of if the SEC should be built is a whole other discussion, or at least it should be. Apparently the voting majority felt it should be built, discussion over. I thought the idea of putting dirt on the racetrack was about the stupidest idea I've ever heard but then thats what was voted for so like it or not its dirt.

Point being the real issue here is that certain people in town seem to have the power to override the voters votes. It should have been built once it was voted in but instead the water has been filled with mud, as usual, in an attempt to defy voters.

Ever get the feeling you're just a puppet on a string? Time to cut the strings and put decisions back in the hands of voters. Even if we don't agree with the majority choice we must agree to honer that choice.

This "I don't agree with the vote so lets vote again" crap is getting old.

Wheres the incentive to vote if it means nothing?

Whats at stake here is not IF we can fill it but getting what was voted and paid for.

I agree Detector the people spoke and good or bad who the hell do these two a-holes think they are to tell everyone they don't want it so it should'nt be built. That's like a little kid getting mad so he takes his ball and goes home so no one can play. I still want someone to tell me how they propose to stop it and how they are going to lower property taxes. They are just trying to tamp sand up our ass and I for one don't care for any.
