| None of the money given to Boot Hill from the WND tax was spent on trying to get gaming in DC or lobbyists. I know that for a fact and I'm sure we can verify it through Boot Hill or the City. All funds raised to seek gaming have been contributed by locals who think (thought) it would benefit DC tourism. Last word I've heard is it's our Commissioner-caused bickering, public flareups, and repeated re-voting on issues that has hurt DC's chance for a casino. Topeka can read the newspapers. We're paying the price for 'not-playing-well-together'. That has nothing to do with Boot Hill's financial problems.

| lurker's not a lawyer and doesn't know the realities of "Home Rule" but it's a legal maneuver that allows a city or county to adopt laws that don't apply to itself where the law applies to another city or county. Gaming is allowed in other parts of this state but not here in DC. Home Rule could allow us to enact gaming laws without Topeka's sayso....

| My view is why would it be so bad to take money and spend it in some manner that would make Boot Hill self sufficient? Is that a bad thing? Even if it was to lobbists - would it matter if it made the entity that much more independent? Then IF it was completely in the black - the city could take some extra funds and help another project - like the park, raceway track, sports complex,.....etc. What's the big deal? Sounds like they didn't have Criteria that had to be met on HOW to spend the money - sounds like they didn't spend it unwisely - but if they had - it wouldn't be the first group in DC that got tax money and blew it.........I love Boot Hill - and I'd drive the 13 hrs to gamble if it were there......

| As usual, I don't understand... [quote=lurker]Gaming is allowed in other parts of this state but not here in DC....QUOTE] Where is gaming legal. Do you mean at the tribal casino's? That's governed by Federal law and State compact. Do you mean parimutel betting at dog and horse tracks? Again, that is a separate issue and specific to only certain tracks. Do you mean Lottery? That's closer, but allowed everywhere in the State and does not include slots or table gaming. I'm just not sure where gaming is allowed in other parts of the State Lurker - enlighten me plz.

| TexKan - I agree completely. Boot Hill could have taken some of the operating funds that were granted, but didn't. They needed every dollar and may still close in February. Gaming has a pretty big impact and would spin-off all kinds of new businesses. PS - Boot Hill has always said that any casino would not be on Boot Hill property - too big, have to be somewhere else, and has to include a hotel, convention center, restaurant(s) etc. - can't just be a casino.

| So just WHO is Boot Hill - I thought there was a board that ran Boot Hill. I know those of us (in my sick crowd) that worked DC days always thought that's kinda what the place was waitin for......IF boot hill is such a drain on the community then it has been very mismanaged OR the people of DC don't embrace it. Maybe it's an Icon that has done it's time. Maybe DC would rather beknown for other things. Who knows - but if a casino could make a spot in the desert work - it couldn't hurt Boot Hill. Room or no room - look how well those "slots" that don't "exhist" in DC do and check to see whos pockets are getting fatter every night cause the same players are playin. Don't ya think Boot hill could use someof that money??? It don't have to be big to be good.........
