Awful-Fun failed on its own and Garden City's failed, too.

Wee three kings* of orient "our" went and spent half a million dollars on a buying spree yesterday.

Kinda sneaky how they kept Terry Lee out of it.

Kinda sneaky how small Smoll stayed out of it.

Really sneaky how they kept US out of it.

Smoll was required to stay out of it due to a conflict of interest.

This is actually probably one of the smartest things the city has done in years.

The property is valued around $1 million.

$500,000 for a $1 million+ property sounds like a pretty good deal.

The fun center had good business, but couldn't pay the six figure property tax bill with the income it generated. Now that it is city owned it will be tax-exempt.

2005 was $44,317.64
2006 is $43,010.14

Whatever the taxes are/were, we're still gunna be paying, and paying, and paying for this.

I don't know where you got that info, I can only go by what I was told by the Denton's.

Also, it's hard to tell by the way the article is written in the Globe. But, the city hasn't purchased it yet. They are leasing the property for up to 3 years to see if it will work before buying it.


PS. It wasn't open in 2006, and most, if not all of 2005.

I'd call this a shafting. We're paying waaaaaay more than it's worth on the open market.

I'm afraid you have it right. Almost anything that was formerly private enterprise and is taken over by a government entity fails. Government can't respond quickly to needed adjustments. And if they have to hire someone to oversee it, it will fail. These types of businesses typically don't make anyone a millionaire.

I think the city has plans to put the water park they want soooooo bad, right next door, and run the whole operation as one unit.
