Don't think for one minute that our modern credit reporting system isn't queried when employers are considering job applicants in all positions of responsibility. For that matter, Insurance companies rely heavily on an applicant's credit history when scoring (determining insurability & premium amounts) the applicant.

Well I know a lot of people are paranoid that their credit status is open to the public but thats just not true. If you've ever checked your credit record you know that by law all queries are also listed. I have always carried insurance but have never seen any insurance company or employer query my credit record. Fact is the only times my credit was ever checked was by loan companies when I applied for a loan which is understandable.

I believe this is the difference of having your credit queried and just getting hired cause you can "do the job"..........I respectfully have to disagree - they do check cops in Texas - got 3 of em in my family. You will find many opportunities "closed" to you in certain jobs if you don't pay your bills. It's called being responsible. Doesn't have to be a practice that is "in your face" to do it. You either allow the background check or you don't - if you don't your app is file 13.............
Just wanted to add that being around 3 young cops - I must say oneof them has no issue with the credit thing. Now the 2 girls (as much as I hate to say it) ya just have to keep an eagle eye on........ya know how us women can be!!!.....It's something they struggle with - but the bills come first - play second

I'm happy you seem to live in a world where nothing happens you have no control over, unfortunately, some of us live in a different world. Circumstances beyond my control are a fact of life, for me anyway.

Again I say other than jobs such as working in a bank I highly doubt a background check, at most jobs, checks on your financial abilities. In fact I'm pretty sure there are laws against it.

Point is nothing would have ever been said if not for this mans public title. Dragging someone dirty laundry out for all to see for no more reason than you can is pretty petty. If it affected his ability to do his job thats one thing but I don't believe it does, so that makes it simply a thoughtless, rude and pointless act.

Now don't take it wrong you are probably right in some cases, but as for me a divorce + doctor bills left me no choice. I had a family to feed. It's not like I was living beyond my means, hell I drove an old station wagon with no forward gears. For weeks I drove in reverse everywhere I went. Needless to say I didn't drive much and when I did it took a long time to get anywhere.

How long has it been since you changed jobs or looked for another? I'm in insurance and I know they're a little paranoid these days....but on the last several employment apps I filled out (last 5 or 6 years), they have all, without exception, had a paragraph and signature box about criminal record check and a paragraph and signature box for credit check. Now, whether they actually do it for all jobs is something else. But they have the capability to do it if you sign the box. Anyone with your social security number (I think that's it - maybe DOB) can check your credit. It does cost money, though - and that's the reason I think a lot of folks don't do it.

Choosing not to do it and not being able to do it are two different things, remember.

You're right its been quite some time since I filled out an application but I do remember seeing the checkbox allowing them to check your credit. I always thought these were a generic employment application and that box applied only to certain job types such as working with money. Anyway, I never granted permission to check my credit and still got hired. Besides, why would they bother asking for permission if they weren't legally bound to do so?

I applied to a bank manager position many years ago and was not hired. The reason they gave me was unsatisfactory credit report. Fidelity State Bank. If local banks do it, why not the city? It only makes sense, especially if you will be in charge of financial matters.

I know the insurance companies have inquired- here it is on my inquiry detail (attched). What I can't understand is why Orbitz and Aquila have inquired- I use neither. I am on propane and Victory, have been for 5 yrs. Also - I have never used GMAC. Lots of nosey companies.

Does the Mayor have the ability to control city funds on his own? I could be wrong but I don't think he does. Not meaning to make the Mayor's position sound unimportant, but I always thought it was more of a public relations position. A spokes person for the city so to say. They have no more power than any other commissioner in that they cannot act alone.

Seems to me one of the odd application I filled out that I thought the credit check was strange was for a plumbing job. Why would a plumber need a credit check? It could have been because I had to be bound-able. Maybe jobs where you need to be bounded require the credit check to be insured.
