Well it's where you are - if you are only bitchin you ain't helpin.

I'm sure that the govt (as bad as it may be) hears everyone. Course they may not read the board all the itme - so I say instead of lettin your fingers do the talkin - take it to thier office and find out why you feel so neglected. I'm sure if you make an appt you could get in to see them. I just think there will never be change if all ya do is complain and not really lobby like everyone else.

I do know however that bigger problem are everywhere to be seen. How come this one is so tough to get under? These guys are small town politics hell in some cities it takes 4 hours just to drive to thier office. Count your blessings - ya'lls are more accessable than ours. You see your reps at WM......... ya gotta belong to the elite to see some of ours. LOL

But then that doesn't fall under the heading of "lobbyist."

Point taken - consider it bitchin instead if that makes ya happier........... voicing your concerns, telling them what ya want......... you can argue symantics all day but in the long run if your fingers are doin the bitchin rather than your mouth in a small town............. you probably are watin some sort of "laid back" time that is better spent in front of your elected officials. To say "they know how we feel" isn't good enough. Often times it's becuase you don't get the whole picture untill you talk to them. It is about ALL ........ like it or not you can't treat illegals and the ones you don't approve of differently cause you want to. There are standards that must be met in order to get the Fed $$ you enjoy. Trust me the financila burden is not squarely on the taxpayor - seems like but it's not. You have the luxery of being in a small town.......... use it!

Before anyone begins........... I already know I don't spell well - must be why I choose face to face.

Sorry people
I meant to say if the sales tax is repealed there will be higher property tax. The reason is because the city and county have an agreement and the county will have to get the money some where.

If not property tax then where will it come from Mike?

The fact is, it doesn't matter where you decide to add to taxes, ya'all are gonna pay it. If you add property tax, everybody pays - even the renters (their rent will go up the same amount as the owner's property tax). The property tax will also add money to goods and services, as merchants and service folks will have to raise prices. If you just add sales tax, it will be tied to the cost of goods & services sold. That's it. You have a much broader tax base if you add to the property tax. Course, you could choose to add to just the commercial property taxes, but you'd still pay it when you buy goods and services......there really isn't an efficient way to spread the taxes soley to visitors from out of the area.

Is the government down there so inefficient that your taxes are that high? It's just not right. Your property taxes are almost as high as mine, yet I have a lot more public services. I don't get it.

retired,

When the County's 1/2% sales tax is repealed, the inter-local agreement will automatically be dissolved! Period!

The sales tax money sitting in the bank (right now approx. 14 million) will be divided between the city and the county, according to how much each brought in. After the county pays all their outstanding debts (bonds issued) for wnd projects, the county will have approx. 5 million dollars automatically transferred into their general budget. The city and the county would have to strike a deal as to who would take ownership of DCRP and Legends Ball complex.

The city would continue the wnd tax and the revenue generated (1.7 Million a year) would pay for our current wnd projects. The city would not have enough sales tax from wnd to build a 34 million dollar sec. The sec would have to be scaled back. Remember, the Judge said build it, but he did not say by whom, how much or how large. And the Judge said build it, while the city and county still had an inter-local agreement.

Some promoters of the sec say that the city would have to release the county from the agreement, however that happened when the county repealed their tax. The city has no authority to release the county since it automatically already happened.

The city will and already has hinted that if the county's tax is repealed that they would increase property tax to make up the difference. THAT IS A NEGITIVE SCARE TACTIC! It would never happen! The city would have to increse our budget by over 2.3 million dollars a year. It will not happen!

Our city commissioners are tax and spend happy, but they are smart enough to realize the ramifications if that were to happen. And it won't happen, Plain and simple!

Thanks Mike.

I appreciate your statements. We still have some people that do not understand what is going on. They will never admit the JUDGE (did not) give any instructions EXCEPT to build an Event Center. (No he did not say, You Must Build In The Park).

Maybe this could be a Convention Center to complement the Casino if it were to pass. I think I read where Mr. Jeff Thorpe made the statement that he would rather have a Convention Center, Motel and Casino in the same general location. An Event Center is NOT required for Gaming.

Another item that I may have left out is what our County Counseller did. According to Mr. Glen Kerbs, made his ruling on a Memorandum. This was from a couple of attorney friends, their own idea what could be done on voting. Also Mr. Ken Stroble City Attorney used the fear tactic about both votes being declared in valid if they set the same date (voting) for both. According to a person which has copies of from Legislative Research Department and the Election Director in the Kansas Secretary of State Office. Both people confirmed to Senator Tim Huelskamp that both Ballots could be voted on the same day.

What would you believe, a Memorandum or some person that works in the Secretary of State Office?

This is why I made the statement The City / County Attorneys were screwing the voters.

To prove my point I asked a Banker the following. If you had an Attorney doing Legal work and you asked for an opinion, and if his advise be from a Memorandum would you accept it as legal. The Bankers reply was No. A Memorandum is short note to remind one of something. We can not work on that kind of advice. We must have every thing Legal in case we need to defend ourselves.

Mr Kerbs did admit that he did not contact any one in Topeka for Legal advises. Now do you see what has happened? If he was worth a grain of Salt he could have contacted the Attorney General for a legal opinion. To think Mr Terry William made the statement that he would go with Kerbs advise, as it has always been the best.
